RadioReverb
Earshot originally conceived RadioReverb in 2001 as an internet radio station for use by our trainees.
As graduate trainees completed their courses, they simply refused to leave and kept coming back to make features and shows for RadioReverb.
Earshot recognised this as a local need for community access broadcasting and with the support and interest from over 150 programme -makers, funding from Connexions-sussex and the city council, in 2004, Earshot applied for a Restricted Service Licence (RSL) and broadcast on FM for 15 days during the Brighton Festival.
Following the city-wide success of this broadcast, a deal was set up with University Radio Falmer (URF), the AM student radio station owned by the University of Sussex Student's Union. In partnership with URF, Earshot linked its studios in North Street to their transmitter on the Sussex University campus. This enabled RadioReverb to provide content live to URF every Saturday, a partnership which continues to this day. If you live on the university campus you can hear RadioReverb on 1431AM and if you live anywhere else, you can hear us streaming live through www.radioreverb.com every Saturday between 10am and 10pm.
Also in 2004 and following many years of lobbying from groups all across the UK, the government passed the Community Radio Order finally enabling the creation of community access broadcasting in the UK for the first time. With a tight deadline for applications, Earshot quickly set up a local steering group to work on Radioreverb's application to OfCom for Brighton's own community radio licence.
A licence was awarded in 2006 and transmission clearance granted in March 2007. The station commenced broadcasting on 97.2 fm on the 26th March 2007. Money to help fund the station has been generated from a number of sources including founders, sponsors, grant-giving bodies and programme-makers. Earshot continues to provide support in-kind through the provision of equipment, studio space and production facilities.
